About 1,200 people live twenty road miles and thirty minutes northeast, by I-72 exit 76 and the county road or by IL-125 from Virginia. A land company that included Governor Richard Yates named it for Henry Clay's Kentucky estate.

Incorporated in 1869, it became a rail town when the B&O arrived in 1871, and fire took much of downtown in 1887. It calls itself the Heart of Lincolnland. Expect rows of street maples, walnut and hackberry on the lot lines, and plenty of dead ash planted last century.
