About 2,300 people live twenty-six road miles and thirty-three minutes south of Jacksonville. Its post office dates to 1827, David Barrow built the first house in 1830, and the town was laid out in 1836.

From 1825 to 1948 it supported 39 commercial potteries, and stoneware from A. D. Ruckel's White Hall Pottery Works is still collected. Under the topsoil sits heavy clay that anchors bur oak and hickory but keeps yards wet in spring. The streets carry silver maple, hackberry and dead ash.
